Since realising the importance of relaxation, I have become more aware of the concept of self care. I have never been that good at ‘self care’, I am always rushing around, trying to fit as much in as possible and this is not necessarily the best thing to be doing. When I was diagnosed it became clear that the level of “stress” that I was putting myself under was not good for me and I was told by a number of people that stress and anxiety can cause flare ups of Ulcerative Colitis so it became clear that I needed to learn how to look after myself and to engage in a bit of self care.
I have started to do Mindfulness, using the Headspace app, which allows me to take 10-15minutes out of the day to engage with some mindfulness. For someone that spent most of my time on the move doing “things” (the work never ends when you live in your own home), taking 10-15minutes a day for myself was a bit of an alien concept. I have enjoyed it a lot and will continue with it as it definitely helped me.
I started to complete a proper skincare routine every morning and every evening which again allowed me to have some time to myself. It also ensured that I was looking after my skin correctly, finally using a cleanser, toner and moisturiser! Revolutionised how my skin felt and increased my confidence.
Starting my nighttime routine included not only my skincare, but also using my diffuser with a lavender scent as well as a pillow spray. The pillow spray was literally a lifesaver. It is called “This Works” and oh my, it’s name is true. It makes me fall asleep so quickly I actually cannot believe it. It sends me to sleep almost immediately. Having better sleep has helped me to recover exponentially.
In general I have just taken more time for myself. I have ensured that I am not always on the move, and that I have time every day for myself.
Self care is so important if you have a long term condition. The key is in the name, long term. This is not a 100m sprint, this is about managing the condition throughout your life.
Take your time, make sure to look after yourself in every way that you can.
