Recovery 1.0

I don’t even know what to call the series of blogs that are going to come next. I’ve decided to write them in bite size pieces, ready for people to read quickly and easily because as always, a hell of a lot happens in very short periods of time and it as ever hasn’t been a smooth ride.

I had my surgery on 2nd February 2021 and I woke up in recovery being told that it had all gone well. I looked down and checked, stoma bag was there as well as a drain in my stomach, a rather large surgical wound on my stomach through my belly button and four ports for key hole. I had a catheter in (lovely) and I was connected to a PCA (Patient Controlled Analgesia) and had oxygen things stuck up my nose. All in all, I felt drowsy but I was alright, didn’t feel too bad.

I quite quickly made the decision to look down at my stoma and get used to it. It was covered by a bag that was see through so we could check that it was working. I actually wasn’t freaked out by it which was positive, I felt like this was going to be something that I could work with. I was doing alright.

After a few hours in recovery, I was moved to Dilham Ward which is a surgical ward to start my recovery. It was time to do a lot of sleeping but also trying to get myself moving as soon as possible, little steps were going to be the aim of the game, little, consistent steps…
