Food has certainly been interesting while in the hospital. I was initially put on a low fibre diet, but not really told what that entirely means. Now I do know the food groups and I have some idea of what fibre is and what it does BUT when faced with a number of choices of hospital food that I didn’t entirely know what they contained, it is pretty difficult to work out what I am doing. I had a lot of sausages and potatoes with something that they told me was vegetables (that was questionable). I was being given the option of some LUSH puddings though, Jam Sponge with custard, chocolate chip pudding and ice cream, I was totally in pudding heaven. After the first night of trying a chicken hotpot but it going cold because I was too busy having a toilet attack I went for what they call the finger food option, this usually revolved around sausages or chicken nuggets and some chips.
Lots of people complain about hospital food but I honestly don’t understand why. I was always given multiple options and most of them sounded really good, from Cottage Pie and Irish Stew to Beef Lasagne and Macaroni cheese I thought that the selection was very good. For lunch there was just as good a selection as dinner times and there was also always the option of either a jacket potato or soup and a sandwich.
The other thing with being in hospital was that there was always the tea trolley coming round. At regular intervals throughout the day you would be offered Tea or Coffee (or as I always asked for, juice) and it was nice to break up the day with a couple of juice boxes.
Overall food is something in the hospital that I have not been disappointed by! Everyone has allowed me to eat as much as I want, often ordering weird meals like Chicken Nuggets and chips with an omelette and garlic bread! I think the other thing I have to say is that you just have to ask! When I first went in I was quite hungry all the time, I hadn’t eaten properly in quite a while and so I was trying to eat a lot as I was hungry. The nurses were more than happy to help, grabbing me sandwiches and yoghurts from the fridge whenever they were able to, I just had to ask!
